DisplayPort (DP) is a digital connection standard developed by VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) that hit the market in 2006.
This port is designed for computers and monitors so that they can transmit video, audio and data from a PC graphics card to a monitor. In addition, it supports high resolutions and a high refresh rate, above 144 Hz.
To take full advantage of DisplayPort, your monitor must be able to maintain a minimum refresh rate of 144Hz at 1440p or 4K resolution and support VRR.
In addition, your computer's AMD or NVIDIA GPU must be compatible with DisplayPort and have the ability to run video games (at least competitive titles such as Fortnite, Valorant, Counter-Strike...) above 144 Hz to squeeze all the performance out of the port.
Why use DisplayPort when playing video games
There are three types of DisplayPort. The first of them is DP 1.2, which has a bandwidth of 17.28 Gbps and supports a resolution of 1080p at 240 Hz and 1440p at 144 Hz. The second version is DP 1.4, created for a bandwidth of 25.92 Gbps and a resolution of 1440p at 240 Hz and 4K at 144 Hz. It fits Note that DP 1.4 is the most common standard today.
Finally, there is also the DP 2.0 and 2.1, both reach a bandwidth of 80 Gbps and support 4K resolution at 240 Hz. The only difference between the DP 2.0 and 2.1 is that the 2.0 only offers 8K resolution at 60 Hz, while the 2.1 supports a 120 Hz refresh rate.
There are several reasons why DisplayPort, compared to HDMI, is a better alternative when playing games on your computer. Firstly, the vast majority of Display Ports circulating on the market are type 1.4, which means that you will enjoy a high refresh rate without compressing the image, that is, without sacrificing resolution. This is thanks to the fact that it runs 1440p at 240 Hz and 4K at 144 Hz.
However, the key point in opting for DisplayPort is that this port is fully compatible with synchronization enhancements such as VRR, Adaptive Sync, AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-SYNC. Thanks to these technologies, the video game will run much more fluidly because you will not have to deal with problems such as tearing (screen tearing), stuttering (micro-cuts) and input lag.
Additionally, although the Display Port maintains high refresh rates, you will not have to sacrifice image improvements because it is capable of reproducing 10-bit HDR without a visible drop in quality, so the game will have excellent color reproduction and contrast and sharpness will be optimized.
