The DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling or deep learning super -site) is a technology owned by NVIDIA that serves to improve the performance and image quality of video games on computers that have a NVIDIA graphics card. What the DLSS does is "climb a game", that is, lower the resolution of the video game and then rebuild it in a higher resolution.
For example, if you activate the DLSS and configure the game to run in 2K, this tool renders the title resolution in 900p and then "recess" to 2K. Thanks to this technique, you could even triple the FPS of the video game maintaining a good image quality, which is useful if you want to play with a high update frequency, such as 144 Hz, 160 Hz or more.
The DLSS has the ability to implement an intelligent and precise “relescalado” in all processes related to the improvement of image and increase of FPS. This is because it has an artificial intelligence that has been trained with thousands of hours of play to improve its performance.
Due to training, the AI recess the video game achieving a performance almost identical to the one you would get with a native resolution because the loss of image quality will be minimal.
At present, more than 700 video games have support for NVIDIA DLSS and more than 100 of them are compatible with DLSS 4. Some of the famous titles that include DLSS are: Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Diablo IV, God of War Ragnarok, Hogwarts Legacy, Indiana Jone and the Great Circle, Marvel Rivals, GTA V, among others.
How does DLSS work?
The DLSS works with various ways, which are: ultra performance, performance, balanced and quality. Depending on the way you choose, the game will render to a lower resolution, which allows more fps to be obtained.
In this way, for example, if you use the DLSS in “Ultra Performance” this will sacrifice the image quality to increase the fps to the maximum (triplic and even quadruple the FPS).
On the contrary, if you select the “quality” mode, the DLSS will focus on offering a good image quality and will enhance the SPFs a bit (you could receive an increase of 5 to 10 fps or even double them if the video game is not very demanding).
In addition to its modes, the DLSS also integrates other functions that allow optimizing the image and the FPS, these are:
- Ray Reconstruction: The AI of the DLSS is responsible for improving the quality of lighting and shadows, allowing you to activate the Ray Tracing in the video game because it will not consume so many resources thanks to the Supermuestreo
-Anti-aliasing (DLAA): This option will help you improve the graphics, since anti-aliasing will be responsible for softening the irregular edges of the game, making the "saw teeth" decrease considerably to optimize visual quality.
- Frame Generation: In addition to the DLSS modes, if you want more fps, the Supermuereo also puts at your disposal the function of generation of pictures that serves to increase the frequency of update.
- Multi Frame Generation: It is a tool that, when activating it, uses the AI of the DLSS to insert more paintings in the game and drastically improve the FPS, since it has the ability to quadruple them in many cases, that is, to pass from 40 fps to 180 fps without destroying the image quality.
Types of DLSS and what does each series of cards offer
Since its launch in 2019, the DLSS has been constantly updated to improve its performance. For this reason, there are various versions of the NVIDIA Supermuese, are the following: DLSS 1.0, DLSS 1.9, DLSS 2.0, DLSS 3.0, DLSS 3.5 and, finally, DLSS 4.0, which is the most recent update.
Now, a crucial point is that, despite the fact that the DLSS is exclusive to the graphics cards manufactured by NVIDIA, not all of them offer the same performance with respect to it. That is, the newer the graphics card is, the better its compatibility and performance of the DLSS.
For that reason, there are several aspects that you have to take into account before buying a Nvidia graph because, depending on the model you choose, the DLSS will be more or less efficient. Then, having as a starting point the DLSS 4.0, the graphics cards will offer the following:
- GeForce RTX 20 series: It corresponds to all numbered graphics with 2000, such as 2050, 2060, 2080 TI, etc. In these models the DLSS will only offer the following: Anti-Aliasing (DLAA) to improve stability and offer more details when the game is moving.
DLSS Super Resolution also counts to improve the performance and quality of image and Integra DLSS Ray Reconstruction, which optimizes the Ray Tracing through AI that is responsible for reconstructing lighting effects, reflexes and shadows.
- GeForce RTX 30 series: It retains everything of the RTX 20 series and adds the reflex NVIDIA function that serves to reduce latency in competitive games and incorporates Nvidia Broadcast, a tool for streamers with noise cancellation and virtual background.
- GeForce RTX 40 series: It has everything in the 20 and 30 series and integrates DLSS Frame Generation, a Nvidia technology that creates additional fps in video games to improve its fluidity without increasing the workload of the GPU. This function has the ability to generate up to three frames for each rendering, multiplying the performance up to eight times.
- GeForce RTX 50 series: In addition to all the above functions, the 50 series has the latest creation of NVIDIA, the DLSS Multi Frame Generation. The objective of this technology is to multiply the SPFs in video games through AI so that the visual experience is "ultra fluid."
This makes it possible to get FPS rates up to eight times higher than standard rendering. Thus, for example, in a game like Cyberpunk 2077 and GTA V enhanced you can reach 240 fps or more in 4K resolution without demanding more rendering power to the GPU.
