We are a Linux -based operating system which is owned by the Valve company (US company developer). The objective of Steamos is to offer its users an optimized game experience for the PC.
The platform is open, which means that it offers total freedom to install any software or content you want. In this way, Steamos works as a user interface that provides direct connectivity to the Steam ecosystem as if it were a game console, but you will have at your disposal the Linux desktop.
On the other hand, this operating system is designed to be compatible with thousands of Steam games, where a large number of these are specifically optimized to perform in the best possible way in Steimos, something that offers a profitable advantage to devices such as the Steam Deck.
Steamos characteristics
As it is a platform created to play the titles you have in Steam as if it were a console, we have various peculiarities:
- Complete access to everything Steam offers: Game Library, Steam Cloud, Steam Link, Chat, games recording and more.
- Compatible interface with controls, you can use the controls of Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch without problems or limitations.
- If your Steam game is compatible with controls, we will automatically map the control buttons.
- It offers quick resumption, that is, you can get out of the game and, when you return, you will resume it where you left it.
- It has integrated system updates, you should not worry about updating drivers or adjusting the PC hardware to obtain the best performance in the video game.
- It is a free open source operating system, you can modify it and customize it as you want.
What differentiates us from other operating systems for PC
While we are based on Linux, its main difference with other platforms is that it is limited to the Steam service. Thus, when you light your computer, you will not find a desk like Windows or Linux, but you will enter your Steam Games Library as if it were a console.
As for its design, you will not navigate for all the programs and options of the menu. The interface is similar to that of the Steam app and will give you all the tools you need to install and eliminate video games, chat with friends, consult your achievements, record the screen and transmit your games. Even, within Steamos you will have at your disposal a browser to look for information on the Internet without leaving the system.
Now, although you will start your computer directly in the Steam service, it should be noted that we also offer a desktop mode. Thanks to this, you can use the Linux operating system in a traditional way as if it were a PC. However, this option is designed for advanced users because installing programs and apps in Linux is not as simple and direct as in Windows.
Who is we addressed
We are made for all those who have a computer dedicated only to video games. With this operating system, the game experience is transformed into something fluid, fast and safe, since it is only a matter of turning on the PC and choosing the title you want to play to start the game, since we will do everything else for you (choose the best configuration to run the game).
Taking into account the previous scenario, it is also an ideal operating system for consolidated PCs (Handheld PC) because it will transform them into a portable game console. What is a great advantage because you should not deal with Windows, you will not have to worry about installing drivers and the game will run totally optimized to stem.
Now, if you play, work and consume content on your computer, we may not be the best option for you. Although the operating system gives access to the Linux desktop mode, the installation of apps and software will be slow and complicated if you have no experience using this platform, which will make you miss Windows.
Steamos installation requirements
The operating system is available on the official Steam website and demands simple hardware to run correctly:
- 64 -bit Intel or AMD processor
- 4 GB of RAM
- 200 GB of free space in the HHD or SSD
- Nvidia graphics card (without specific model), AMD (Radeon 8500 or higher) or Intel
