OpenAI, the company that created the conversational Artificial Intelligence ChatGPT and Microscope, has surprisingly announced the closure of Sora, its AI model that allows the generation of video content.
This AI was created in 2024 and just six years ago the company had launched its own independent app, in which users could share their audiovisual creations with AI, as if it were a social network.
In addition, last December OpenAI and Disney had signed an agreement to allow more than 200 characters from the Disney, Pixar and Marvel factories to appear - and be recreated with artificial intelligence - in their videos. The agreement is no longer valid due to the closure, which will affect both the application itself - both its version for consumers and professionals - and the development of the AI model for video generation.
It is surprising as it is one of the first closures of an Artificial Intelligence, and after having been investing in its development and growth to date. However, OpenAI is at a crossroads to beat Gemini, Google's AI, and a reputation crisis for having allowed the United States Government, with Donald Trump at the helm, to use its Artificial Intelligence.
In this context, OpenAI seems to need to reorganize and prioritize its strategy to, among other things, ensure the viability of ChatGPT - which has started showing ads - hence the closure of Sora.
The company assures that it prefers to allocate its resources and efforts more to programming, robotics and business tools. It is also considering going public. Possibly the high price that has to be paid for the generation of videos, since their creation consumes many resources, and the fierce competition from other AIs for video creation are also reasons that have had their weight in the closure.
The same happens with the creation of the independent app with AI content, which has not had the expected effect on users. Its closure now raises doubts about the future of other similar apps that are committed to creating feeds made up solely of videos with Artificial Intelligence, from Vibes de Meta.
