The company ACCIONA Energía located it. It is a wreck dated between the 5th and 4th centuries BC off the coast of Calabria (Italy). It preserves a shipment of more than 300 amphorae inside, as reported by the company this Monday. The discovery occurred during feasibility work on an offshore wind project. The ship submerged 2,500 years ago is a new treasure found under the sea.
These actions are part of an extensive seabed characterization program. It is intended to identify possible archaeological, environmental and technical conditions early and guarantees the responsible development of the project. To carry them out, advanced bottom prospecting and characterization technologies have been used. It was done by a multidisciplinary team. It is made up of specialists in marine archaeology, geology, marine biology and other scientific disciplines.
Wine in amphorae
The results of the investigations were transferred to the competent authorities. They activated the corresponding procedures for the protection and conservation of underwater cultural heritage. After the identification of the site and given its archaeological relevance, a specific project was launched. It is responsible for the study, recovery, conservation and enhancement of the wreck and its cargo. The project is fully financed by the Ministry of Culture.
The discovery of the ship submerged 2,500 years ago provides relevant information about trade routes and maritime exchanges in the ancient Mediterranean.
